03 November 2009

UK-based Studio Bednarski, together with bridge engineers Flint & Neill, New York based mechanical engineers Hardestry & Hanover and lighting designers Spiers and Major have won an international competition to design the new Inderhavnen Bridge, Copenhagen, Denmark The winning design for Københavns Kommune (Copenhagen City Council) presented the lowest profile for the 180 m-long bridge, which has an opening span of 50 m and a 7 m-wide deck. The design also features a telescopic mechanism, with a transparent design that allows views along and across Copenhagen’s Inderhavnen (Inner Harbour). Horizontal viewing platforms at the edge of the navigation channel allow views of the telescopic mechanism in action. Commenting on the design, Studio Bednarski founder Cezary Bednarski said, “We have deliberately avoided high structural elements, which would interrupt views across and along the harbour, both when the bridge is closed and when it is open.
