Video: London 2012 gateway station update

14 May 2009

New pictures and a time lapse video released by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) show construction progress at Stratford Regional Station ahead of the London 2012 Games.

The time lapse footage shows installation of the Town Centre Link Bridge, which is being pushed over the 11 railway lines at Stratford in three stages this year.

The new pictures show work underway on extending the canopy over platforms 6 to 8 to protect passengers from bad weather, work on converting old platforms for use on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which will then become part of the extension being built from Stratford Regional to Stratford International, progress on one of the new lifts to improve accessibility at the station, and progress on the new mezzanine entrance, which will help to treble the station's capacity and improve passenger interchange between lines.

Most of this work will benefit commuters and residents long before London 2012, as it will be finished by the end of next year.

The new entrance for the station at mezzanine level, which will be the biggest visible change to the front of the station, will help reduce congestion during the Games. It will allow people leaving the Olympic Park to bypass the subways and use a new bridge to directly access the new Central line and DLR platforms for services towards London.

Completed work at the station includes, widening Platform 6 to 8, removing "platform clutter" to create more space on the platform, and installing two new lift.

The ODA is also restoring and re-opening the eastern subway, which will reduce congestion and provide easier interchange between services.

Commenting on the work, ODA Transport Director Hugh Sumner said, "The vast majority of spectators going to the Games by train in 2012 will use Stratford Regional Station. This UK£ 100 million (€ 1.11 million) construction project to treble capacity will make sure that we can get everyone to the Olympic Park quickly and safely."
