The team chosen for a 30,000 m2 extension to the Hospital Hvidovre in Copenhagen, Denmark, will include international engineering and project management consultancy Royal HaskoningDHV.

The Hvidovre project is funded by the National Quality Fund (Statens Kvalitetsfond) and the Capital Region (Region Hovedstaden) to a total of DKK1.4 billion (€187 million).

The new extension will include an emergency ward, a paediatrics ward, and obstetrics and cardiology departments. The winning design team comprises Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Aarhus Arkitekterne, Kragh & Berglund landscape architects, Søren Jensen consulting engineers, and Royal HaskoningDHV for structural design and building services.

Eduard Boonstra, Royal HaskoningDHV’s director for business development, healthcare, said, “A well-designed hospital provides friendly surroundings for the patient and a place where staff can function at their best in response to the rapid developments in the healthcare process. We add value by adding our knowledge of future-proof building concepts to the already well-developed Danish healthcare system.”

The next two years will be spent creating a detailed design for the new hospital. The aim is to hand over detailed construction plans to contractors in 2016, with the new building scheduled for completion in 2020.

As part of the Indigo Consortium, Royal HaskoningDHV is also working on the New Aalborg University Hospital together with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Aarhus Arkitekterne and other companies.
