India’s biggest construction company Larsen & Toubro has won a contract to build an extension to the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Indonesia.

The Jakarta MRT Phase 2A is an extension of the existing line for the section between Bundaran HI up to and including Kota, with a total length of 12.5km and seven underground stations.

L&T secured the order through its long-term Japanese partner Sojitz Corporation and it is its first engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) systems order in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

The package of works involves procurement and delivery of multiple systems on a design and build basis, including overall systems integration. The project scope includes trackworks, overhead contact system, substation system, power distribution systems, signalling system and telecommunications systems, platform screen doors and modification of equipment installed in the existing overhead contact system and the stations.

L&T classified the work as a “significant” project, worth in the range of Rs 1,000 to 2,500 crore (US$120.7 million – US$301.6 million).

The company said it hoped the order would strengthen its foothold in the ASEAN region, where several railway projects are being developed over the next decade.
