Formwork in Basque

18 November 2008

The construction of the 391 m Basagoiti viaduct near the town of Mondragón in the Basque region of Spain was completed a few weeks ago, ahead of schedule.
A key link on the new Vitoria to Eibar motorway, the project saw the erection of 1800 tonnes of RMD Kwikform equipment including the company’s Megashore 1000 kN heavy duty steel shoring, superslim soldiers, R700 girders, kwikstage shoring and T200 timber beams.
“As with any technically difficult and unique formwork structure of this magnitude, the key to its success was ensuring it was properly supported,” said Andrés Rodríguez, RMD Kwikform Ibérica’s senior engineer on the project.
“Having worked on projects in the past with similar terrain issues to the Basagoiti viaduct, our engineers chose a tried and tested support structure using R700 steel girders supported by Megashor towers and positioned on concrete blocks at dedicated intervals,” said Mr Rodríguez.
“By combining a suitability to site approach to the project with a strong technical team, we were able to identify crucial strengthening points within the design,” said Mr Rodríguez.
