EIB, EBRD fund Slovenian power plant

10 March 2013

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are to part-finance the construction of a thermal power plant and associated infrastructure in the city of Sostanj in Slovenia.

The 600 MW power plant will cost €1.2 billion to develop. EIB is to provide €550 million in financing, while EBRD will loan the project €200 million. The Slovenian government will finance the remaining balance.

The completion of the project will provide Slovenia with a much higher degree of efficiency than the existing five units that the new plant will replace. The new plant will generate up to 30% more electricity with no additional C02 emissions.
