An upgrade of the 81km section of the road network has been identified as having potentially significant economic benefits for the region, which sits near the country’s border with Turkmenistan.

The proposed project aims boost economic growth by improving connections and reducing transportation costs between the city of Urgench and regional towns within the Horezm region.

The scope of the project encompasses a multifaceted approach to road development, including:

  • Road rehabilitation: A total of 81km of the major 4R156 regional road will undergo restoration and modernisation, as part of a larger network upgrade.
  • Bridge construction: A major feature of the project involves the construction of a bridge over the Amu Darya river.
  • Enhanced road infrastructure: The initiative involves the establishment of a new grade-separated junction and the installation of two weighing stations within the Horezm region.
  • Climate resilience: It is anticipated that the improved road infrastructure will be better equipped to withstand the effects of climate change.

As part of the post-signing technical cooperation, a strategy will be devised to develop electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across Uzbekistan.
