Concept designs unveiled for Poland’s CPK airport

The design has been prepared by the British consortium of Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, which signed a contract with CPK last November to act as the master architect on the project.

A large atrium will sit at the heart of the interchange, connecting the airport terminal, railway station, and various modes of transportation under one canopy.

Covering an area of approximately 400,000m², the passenger terminal will be situated on two levels and be connected to four modular piers, which can be expanded in the future to meet market demands.

Multimodal hub

The CPK railway station will consist of six underground platforms with 12 tracks, accommodating regional and long-distance trains.

The station will be located in the atrium on the north side of the terminal, with covered platforms.

The interchange will feature bus bays, waiting areas with ticket counters, and retail facilities.

The development of hotels near the bus station will mark the initial stages of the nearby Airport City project.

The first phase of the CPK airport, encompassing two parallel runways and infrastructure capable of accommodating 40 million passengers, is scheduled to be operational in 2028.

Modular design allows for expansion

However, the CPK General Plan envisions modular expansion beyond the initial phase. According to projections by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airport could handle up to 65 million passengers by 2060.

Mikolaj Wild, CEO of CPK, said, “Today we are presenting the architectural concept of the terminal for the first time.

“We are demonstrating how we are going to ensure passenger comfort and how we combine different modes of transport in one place.

“As of today, we know what the terminal, the heart of CPK and the aviation gateway to the world, is going to look like.

“For those arriving, this will be the first experience of our country. We are also unveiling the first railway station so closely integrated with an airport.”

Marcin Horala, Poland’s deputy minister for funds and regional policy, said, “According to the schedule and in line with previous announcements, we are consistently implementing the next steps in preparation for the construction of CPK.

“I am convinced that this modern architecture, which was developed with the world-leading designers, will create gigantic business opportunities, attract foreign investments and stimulate economically not only Poland, but the entire region of Central and Eastern Europe.”
