Bouygues builds London hospital

11 September 2015

Bouygues UK has been awarded a €257 million contract to design and build a hospital dedicated to advanced cancer treatment and surgery services in central London, UK.

The contract has been awarded by University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust.

Madani Sow, chairman and CEO of Bouygues UK, said, “This latest contract highlights our enviable reputation for building first-class healthcare facilities across the capital. We are proud to be working with UCLH on the delivery of what will be part of a vital new, national service for NHS (National Health Service) patients here in the UK.”

Designed by architects Scott Tallon Walker in association with Edward Williams Architects, the treatment centre will be one of the first facilities of its kind in the UK. It will form part of a new national high energy proton beam therapy programme run by the NHS. Proton beam therapy is a highly targeted form of radiotherapy that is able to treat local cancers in hard-to-reach areas, potentially reducing damage to nearby tissue and other side effects.

The new building, developed with funding from UCLH and the British Department of Health, will be built in close proximity to UCLH’s Cancer Centre and radiotherapy services, creating a leading hub for cancer treatment in central London.

The proton beam therapy facility will be located underground, and there will be five additional floors above ground offering care and treatment of blood cancer and short stay surgery.

Bouygues Travaux Publics will contribute its expertise for the underground element of the project, which involves excavation of 25m as well as the installation of the latest proton beam therapy equipment – weighing around 120 tonnes below ground level.

The works have already begun and the centre is expected to begin treating patients in 2019.

Operating in the UK for around 20 years, Bouygues has progressively grown its businesses in property development (Bouygues Development), building (Bouygues UK), civil works (Bouygues Travaux Publics) and energy and services (Bouygues Energies & Services).

The group has built and continues to operate several hospitals in south east England – North Middlesex, Central Middlesex, West Middlesex, Barnet and Broomfield.
