EIB funds new port

The EIB (European Investment Bank) is to lend € 100 million to the Port of Zadar Authority in Croatia to help build a new ferry port to accommodate larger ships.

The loan will finance design and construction of the infrastructure, as well as environmental measures. In a statement the EIB said the project “Creates new opportunities for the historical city of Zadar while strengthening the harbour's European links.”

The EIB is currently supporting investment projects in Croatia that will help it prepare for EU membership, which is currently scheduled for 2010, through transport, energy and communication infrastructure, EU environmental standards, and support for smaller companies and municipalities.

Since 2001 the EIB has lent Croatia a total of € 1,26 billion, including € 765 million for various transport infrastructure schemes.
