11 March 2014

UK contractor Costain has been awarded a £150 million (€180 million) contract by Network Rail to carry out station and infrastructure construction works for the north-east surface section of the Crossrail route in London, UK.

Costain will work on the route between Stratford in east London and Shenfield in Essex. The contractor will be responsible for the design and build of major station improvements at Romford and Ilford as well as improvements at stations including Forest Gate, Goodmayes, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Chadwell Heath and Brentwood.

Station works will include platform extensions to allow for longer, higher capacity trains to run, and installing new lifts to enable step-free access.

Major infrastructure improvements will also be delivered including the upgrade of existing tracks and overhead electrification equipment as well as extra train stabling capacity and turnback facilities.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2014 and is scheduled for completion in 2017.
