Czech Republic-based contractor Eurovia CS has completed the modernisation of a 67km long stretch of motorway between the country’s two largest cities.

Eurovia, a subsidiary of Vinci SA, undertook the resurfacing and widening works to a section of the D1 motorway that runs towards Prague between Koberovice and Humpolec.

The company used the new paving train from Wirtgen to pave the road surfaces with exposed aggregate concrete.

According to Wirtgen, the two-layer paving method was chosen for the project as it allows a less expensive mix to be used for the road bed. This means it is more cost-effective as only the top layer of the road surface requires a more expensive exposed aggregate concrete.

While Eurovia’s two SP 154(i) slipform pavers were employed create the 22cm-thick bottom layer and 5cm-thich top layer concrete of paving, a TCM 180(i) texture curing machine was used to produce the exposed aggregate concrete surface, with a texture depth of roughly 1.0mm.

The works were carried out over 20 days and saw Eurovia, which has also been contracted to complete other sections of the motorway, use more than 60,000 tonnes of concrete.

Eurovia’s project is part of the large-scale modernisation of the country’s 8,820km-long D1 motorway. It aims to increase the capacity and improve the flow of traffic on the road and involves multiple sections and multiple contractors operating under separate contracts.
